Distinguished and Famous people from Dardanup
🌾 Thomas Little
Thomas Little was an early European farmer in Dardanup, raising cattle and grain and later producing wine. His contribution to the settlement included donating land in 1852 for a Catholic church. Its foundation stone was laid in 1854 and the building was in use by 1857. Restored as a hall in 1979, it was named for him and remained a community facility. That surviving building connects his agricultural enterprise and support for local institutions with the town’s continuing public life.
🎭 Nita Pannell
Nita Pannell was born at Wellington Mill in 1904 and attended the local primary school. The timber town’s different languages and accents helped develop the ear for speech that later served her on stage. Teaching preceded a distinguished theatrical career, including roles in The Shifting Heart and The One Day of the Year. She also worked with Mary Durack on Swan River Saga. Wellington Mill’s connection is a genuine childhood and education, well before the major productions. An ability to listen closely to how people spoke became one of her most useful professional tools.
